6 advantages of illuminated signage and lighting

let's chat, call us today on 01480 597 444

How lighting and illuminated signage benefit businesses

Lighting and illuminated signage might feel like a ‘nice to have’, but their benefits are often underrated.

In fact, upgrading to illuminated signage can ensure that your brand is constantly visible – and we think that’s a ‘must-have’!

Put your brand on the map

Adding good-quality signage to your building and making sure it’s illuminated have several advantages. Not only does it make you easy to find, but it also lets your town, neighbours and potential customers know you are there.

We think illuminated signage is the fastest way to make sure you aren’t forgotten and are constantly visible – day or night!

Putting your name in lights is a quick win if you’re looking to get your brand on the map – particularly if you are new to the town or have recently rebranded your business.

Safety

Which leads us neatly to safety. How much traffic chaos have you caused slowing down to look for a business in the past (not to mention the extra time added to your journey)? High-quality, clear, illuminated signage make you easy to find, and ensure that your customers, delivery drivers or new staff arrive safely and in a chilled-out state!

Choice

Illuminated signage can be designed to suit your building and colour matched to your brand. Office graphics have come a long way, and there are so many ways to make your office shine!

Rather than explain, we’ve shown real life examples we’ve installed!

illuminated signage & lighting ideas

Indoor and outdoor signage

You can make a real statement with illuminated signage, both inside and out. Shining a light on your building – and your brand – can create a showstopping experience for customers from the minute they park their car to the moment they sit down in your boardroom.

Use unique lighting to spruce up a dull office space and keep guests cheery while they’re waiting for their lift.

Put your brand values in up lights in your boardroom or kitchen area to hammer home what’s important to you. Your favourite motivational motto is calling out to be put in lights on the office wall!

There are a whole host of ways you can use illuminated signage to your benefit.

And don’t forget your warehouses! Businesses often think there’s no point in illuminating their commercial warehouse premises.

However, we’ve installed backlit signage on the exterior of customer buildings to guide hauliers in and out and have brightened up the offices in warehouses using LED (illuminated Light-emitting diode) signs to make the working environment inviting and welcoming (to both staff and guests).

Energy & cost efficient

If you’re wondering how much lighting your building will cost, you’ll be pleased to hear it’s incredibly energy efficient.

Long gone are the days when lights sucked the life out of the national grid. Illuminated signs use LEDs, meaning they are cost-efficient and extremely long-lasting.

With a huge choice of weatherproof materials guaranteed for years and energy-efficient lighting, outdoor signage will look after itself.

Installation costs depend on the height of the building, size of the installation, whether access is restricted (for example, if your premises are on a busy high street) and if extra equipment or safety measures are required.

But, in general, illuminated signage is extremely cost-efficient to install and run, and we can talk you through all of the options during a site survey.

Customised

The beauty of the choice of materials on offer when we design and manufacture your illuminated signs is the ability to customise the signs for the intended space.

This is particularly useful if you have multiple locations and need to customise every sign but need to keep them consistently on-brand.

A lighting and signage partner

Hundreds of businesses trust us to help with their illuminated signage and lighting their business in just the right way. We’re always happy to advise and offer practical ideas and solutions to suit your premises. Contact us to talk about your project.

Event branding for luxury beauty event

Hollie Sheridan — Thu, 02 Feb 2023 21:06:07 +0000

Event branding for luxury beauty event

let's chat, call us today on 01480 597 444

The Beauty Beat

Take one luxury beauty event: The Beauty Beat, a luxury beauty event for Women of Colour – a first of its kind in the UK and Motive installing the event graphics and the result was a roaring success!

The Beauty Beat was powered by Instagram and supported by the British Beauty Council and Klarna.

With 800 guests, including high profile influencers and A-listers, the event was a sell out with delegates excited to listen to a great lineup of speakers and explore the world’s best-loved beauty brands.

We were part of the team transforming the Congress Centre in central London with gorgeous event branding, ready for the doors opening. By the time Team Motive downed tools, we’d seamlessly installed and perfectly matched up 200m of vinyl, inside and out!

The details…

When a customer says the event branding and graphics will be seen by millions of people, we’re not going to lie, we take it with a pinch of salt.

In December this is exactly what happened, all 32 million of them!

It goes without saying, regardless of how many people will see them, each project is treated equally important and every graphic should be perfect. With the scale and publicity around this project we knew we needed to be on our A-game.

Over the course of just a few days we installed 800 meters of fully branded colour graphics to the interior and exterior of the venue, wrapped huge beauty props which included sponsor Instagram’s branding and did some serious project coordination.

The challenge

It wasn’t always straightforward. The venue had specific rules which they needed us to adhere to – they just didn’t always tell everyone what the rules were.

I liaised with The Beauty Beat founder, Donna, and the venue to ensure the graphics met everyone’s expectations.

“Dave came up with ideas and made suggestions that even the venue had never tried and they looked incredible!” Donna Dia, The Beauty Beat Founder.

I could see how frustrating the situation was for Donna and she had plenty else to do, so I stepped in and attended meetings with the venue to get the project finished and without any issues.

It was one thing Donna didn’t have to worry about and I could make and agree suggestions in the moment with the venue.

“I can count on one hand the number of people I trust. I hadn’t even worked with Dave or Motive before.

I trusted Dave to meet the venue’s management team to run through what we were doing. I just said ‘I can’t focus on this right now, you’re going to have to do it’ and he did. I trusted he’d do the right thing and I don’t trust many, especially someone I’ve only recently met.”

Donna Dia, The Beauty Beat.

Donna had paid a substantial deposit, so it was our responsibility to ensure we kept the venue happy and got every penny of Donna’s deposit back.

Onsite, our seasoned installer and Director Zak was running the project and ensuring the graphics were going up to our exacting standards.

Back at Motive HQ, last minute changes to speakers meant we were updating artwork as quick as we were printing it. “If I was testing their patience, they never showed it. They really know what they’re doing and they’re fun to work with.” Donna

We took time to check surfaces and work out the best way to achieve what we and The Beauty Beat wanted without any damage to surfaces of the building infrastructure.

“Every detail was covered. They spent ages working out the best way to achieve something without damaging or marking anything, which would’ve compromised my vast damage deposit.” Donna

The Beauty Beat in a snapshot

The result

⭐ Event branding, production and installation

⭐ Perfectly matched up 200m of vinyl, inside and out!

⭐ Props wrapped

⭐ Full project management

⭐ Full removal

⭐ 1 deposit returned to customer in full

⭐ Lots of laughs had

The event

⭐2 day weekend event, packed with the world’s top beauty brands, speakers and experts

⭐ 800 guests, including high profile influencers and A-listers

⭐ 1.2 million unique views across Instagram and TikTok alone.

The final say

It was a great way to bring the speed and pressure of our exhibition stand building expertise together with our graphics and installations. The event was a hybrid between the two.

Donna was brilliant to work with and being able to turn her vision into reality was amazing. We can’t wait to work with her again.

“It wasn’t just the end result, it was everything in the run up; the fitting; the last minute artwork changes; persuading the hesitant venue team so we could do what we needed to do; they dealt with the challenges, and got the vinyls up and looking amazing, on time.

Motive was incredible; every single team member went above and beyond. We wanted to create a luxe event and that’s exactly what Motive helped us to create.” Donna Dia

How to use commercial signs to your advantage

How to use commercial signs to your advantage

let's chat, call us today on 01480 597 444

Great ways to get your business seen: commercial business sign ideas.

Have you decided to set up your own business or revamp your existing business? We’ve given you 12 great ways to brand your business. From budget ideas to making a statement, we’ve included ideas on how to use commercial signs to your advantage.

Office Graphics

Indoor and outdoor signage

Two great ways to put your own stamp on your premises are through indoor and outdoor signage.

Treat your office graphics as your homing beacon for new prospects, deliveries and prospective employees.

Illuminated signage on the outside of your building will ensure you are spotted day or night, whilst funky office graphics that reflect your brand on the inside will personalise your office space and make it a welcoming and fun environment to work in.

With so many materials and cost-effective LED lighting to choose from, you can get your business to look consistent and professional, without breaking the bank.

We can guide you through the best options for your space and budget, to make the process easy.

Shop Signage

Kerb appeal

From boutique coffee houses to estate agents, how a brand looks from the roadside forms our opinion on the business. It might be the best coffee house in town but if the paint is peeling and the shop graphics are past their sell by date, you’re unlikely to visit.

From shop signage and window graphics, what you can see of the inside through to themed booths with custom graphics, we recommend considering every part of the kerbside experience.

Over time, it can be easy to add things to an interior or order an A-frame that all look slightly different, which can stop your brand looking cohesive and recognisable. Refreshing what you’ve got with the same fonts, colours and designs can be transformational without the expense of a redesign.

Indoor and outdoor signage

Your business signage is important! Using quality materials and illumination will keep it looking great for longer and for less money, if you use LED lighting. Illumination is key if you are a brand that’s open after dark, particularly during the long winter months! Before you go ahead, find out if you’ll need planning permission.

Indoor signage

Indoor graphics can really elevate an interior scheme. Smart lettering or having your brand name or motto in lights can help create a personal ambience.

“Doing indoor and outdoor signage at the same time enables you to visualise how it will look as one seamless experience. It can also be cheaper to do both at the same time, as it’s one team and one van full of equipment in one go.

We often suggest different ideas if we know the interior and exterior will be done together as one scheme” says designer, Hollie.

More than one site? If you have more than one site and have deployed the same interior style then well designed graphics and illuminated signage are a great way to keep the brand consistent whilst customising the size to fit the space and area.

Need inspiration?

We work with Esquires Coffee, a growing independent chain of coffee shops across the region. Their style and signage are consistent whilst the space and size of their premises vary massively.

We’ve worked with them to develop the signage within their brand guidelines, to ensure everyone recognises this brand for its consistent shop graphics inside and out.

“People will only glance at your business, if you put every service and message on there, they won’t stop to read it. What makes you and your business better than the competition? Focus on that.”, Ed Marshall from the Motive team advises.

Commercial signage

Outdoor signage

The types of commercial signage you can install are vast. Your signage can be functional and practical wayfinding or creative and quirky to bring the personality of your brand to life so you are noticed by potential customers.

Your outdoor signage can be simple and relatively small or large scale and lit or unlit.

“Think about when and how people will see your sign. If it’s functional wayfinding and only ever seen in daylight you might choose unlit. If you want people to see it from a distance in every weather condition and time of day, then we’d recommend a lit outdoor sign”, suggests Ed Marshall.

Illuminated signs

If you are looking to upgrade your commercial signage from an unlit sign to one that can be seen day or night, illuminated signage is a great option.

How do you fit a large sign?

During a site survey, we can offer ideas and advice on the design and materials, talk through the health and safety requirements to install the sign on site and liaise with your electrician or recommend our own to make the process seamless.

3 Ways To Take the Frustration Out Of Finding Your Business This Winter

3 Ways To Take the Frustration Out Of Finding Your Business This Winter

let's chat, call us today on 01480 597 444

Have you been frustrated trying to find a business in the dark, silently thinking, “this lot don’t want to be found do they?” How do you ensure that your business doesn’t end up in the same situation?

3 Ways To Take the Frustration Out Of Finding Your Business This Winter

1. Exterior Illuminated Signage

Ask yourself, how easy it is for customers, delivery drivers and suppliers to find your business as the nights draw in and the clocks go back? Are early morning deliveries on a cloudy day hampering your ability to be found? Take a night time or early morning drive by and look at your premises as a new visitor would. How easy is it to find? Can you be identified from the road without issue?

Using light to navigate customers into your premises can offer more than simply practical assistance. It acts as a 24/7 advert, building familiarity for your business. In addition, with LED signage, the only ampage is to your brand and not your energy bill!

You can use your signage as a landmark in the directions you share on delivery instructions, emails to prospects and contact details on your website.

Illuminated signs can be subtle above the door to signpost visitors in, or huge and unmissable on the side of your building. You may need to ask permission from your landlord to erect a sign and you can read more advice on this here.

2. Interior Illuminated Signage

With smart technology and energy-efficient LEDs, illuminated interior signs have become increasingly popular (both in the home and office) with the added benefit of being very instagrammable!

From cool cafes to reception areas, coloured interior illuminated signage can complement your brand and bring your logo and company values to life. If you’re not able to have externally illuminated signage, interior signage in the right position is also a great way to navigate visitors to you.

“We’d really struggled with customers finding us. As soon as we installed our illuminated sign, it made it easier. We weren’t answering the phone every 5 minutes trying to guide people in. Customers love it and it’s more welcoming than lots of bits of paper stuck to the door with our logo on it. We feel 100% more professional. Thank you Motive!”

3. Put your door number in lights

If you can’t accommodate large scale illumination, you can still benefit from lighting. Light up your door number or company name to make your premises easy to find in gloomy conditions and create a professional first impression.

how to manage a sign installation project successfully

An insider’s guide: how to manage a successful signage project from Motive Graphics

We appreciate that undertaking a signage project can be daunting – especially if you don’t have prior experience or simply lack the necessary time to add this into your workload.

In these instances, many clients choose the services of the Motive signage team to guide and support them throughout their project and learn from the experts on the job!

We’d encourage you to do the same if you find yourself in these circumstances.

To get the ultimate sign fitting project guide – read on!

1. understanding the purpose of the signage

What is your sign intended to convey to those that view it? What will be deemed as making the completed sign installation a success? Is there an existing sign that needs to be replaced? If so, is this due to a redesign or to replace old with new? Will it be a like for like replacement or are there new materials that could be utilised for a better outcome?

The design of your signs may be created by a third party such as a design agency or you may wish your sign supplier to provide the sign design on your behalf. If your sign supplier is to produce the design then ensure they are thoroughly briefed and equipped with branding guidelines, sketches, photographs or examples of similar projects that will help them to interpret your vision.

2. understand who the sign project stakeholders are

First and foremost, ensure it is crystal clear what your role is. Then establish which colleagues form part of your project team and their roles and responsibilities.

Do you know who needs to be part of the approval process and at what stages of your project?

Make sure you have identified who will facilitate the on-site fitting of the sign by your chosen sign suppliers.

Document this and circulate to those involved.

Risk assessment, access for the fitters, the general public, overhead wiring, sub stations, underground services – are all things that need thinking about and a H&S representative will need to be involved in a larger business to help navigate you through these.

3. know the expected project timeframes

What are your key milestones? What is the expectation for the completed installation date of your sign? This is the most obvious project deadline however, there will be lots of other crucial timings that need to be met. Your sign supplier will help you to understand the important dates – especially the time that needs to be allowed onsite for the installation window. In your sign fitting project guide, make a simple timeline with some contingency built in, if possible. Ensure individuals know the time resources that they will need to allocate to the project and when. Get the required input from the relevant people in good time to avoid potential hold ups. Continually measure progress against the plan and adjust accordingly.

4. know your budget

You may be allocated a budget and even given detailed specifications for your sign(s) but might not be able to ascertain whether or not this is realistic until after the site survey and consultation with your chosen supplier. By providing as much information as possible to your sign supplier (see our briefing guide for help) they will be able to give you the best solutions to your signage requirements at the best possible price.

Your supplier can also make recommendations on varying materials or manufacturing processes in order to provide different cost-effective alternatives.

A rough estimate can be provided in the first instance to help manage expectations of your project costs.

5. undertake a thorough site survey

Once your chosen supplier has been instructed to provide a detailed quotation, they need to fully understand the scope of the project so will usually request to attend the site(s) to assess the exact requirements of the job.

The site audit will take into consideration sign location(s), the surrounding areas, buildings, substrate conditions, accessibility, power supply and vehicle access. Exact measurements will be taken and plenty more images will be taken.

book your FREE sign site survey today

book now

6. know the legal implications

Do you need planning permission from your local authority for your sign to be erected? Or do you require consent from a landlord to install the sign on rented premises or your trading estate? It is crucial that you know this right at the beginning of your project as you may need to wait some time for approval. Ignore this at your peril.

Fitting roadside signs can be a headache, along with illuminated signs in either a residential area or a culturally or environmentally sensitive area.

7. select the best type of sign for the job

Although you might be restricted by costs, work with your sign supplier to get the most out of your sign budget. There are the obvious design considerations such as, if the sign is to be illuminated and how. There are a multitude of materials that signs can be manufactured from and processes that produce very different looking results. Your supplier can help guide you on these or you could use our helpful guide to types of commercial signs.

8. ensure your sign design works with the surroundings

Not all signs work in every surrounding, while having a good design helps, it also is essential to make sure the design of your sign works aesthetically within its surroundings. If you have a rustic log cabin, then sticking a high tech looking sign on it won’t fit with its style. A good sign company will send you a superimposed visual that will, as much as possible, demonstrate how the final sign design will look once it’s installed – allowing you to get an idea of how it will look. This is a valuable document as it is the final step in the approval process and allows for any final tweaks, prior to manufacturing the sign.

get a FREE visual mock up of your new sign

9. choose your sign supplier wisely

Enough said on this one 😉 Honestly though, it is good practice to check the reputation of any sign company you appoint for your project. Take a look at their TrustPilot and Google Reviews, and check out their social media accounts to see what they are capable of. There are a lot of big and small companies in the UK ranging from the one person set up to franchise companies who are suited to different needs. One person or sole traders can be time poor as it is just them and this can sometimes have a negative affect your timescales on a project, whereas larger companies may not be the most cost-effective for smaller jobs.

10. ensure you communicate

How often should each of the stakeholders be informed? Ensure all involved are kept abreast of the project updates. Poor communication can result in misunderstandings which can cost time and money and, at the worst outcome – a rework of the job!

Adhering to the key elements of our sign fitting project guide will help to keep you on track.
